Micro CHP: Types of fuel that can be used

Micro CHP systems can use a wide variety of fuels. Most CHP systems today use heavy fuel oil or natural gas, which are readily available and easy to use. And although these traditional fuels already produce a huge cost savings when used with micro chp, in the future, micro CHP can also be run on:

- biomass

- woodgas

- solar thermal

- clean coal

- biodiesel

- wind power

Systems can also use multi-fuel - such as when you need a back-up to a less predictable energy source like solar.

Basic considerations as far as the choice of fuel are cost, environmental effects, convenience, cost and ease of transportation and storage, safety, and system maintenance costs.

As the cost of "green" fuels goes down and the technology becomes more refined and effective, the popularity of micro chp is likely to grow. Even run on gas or oil, however, these microchp systems can save you money and reduce your carbon footprint.
